Several years ago, on an absolute whim, I started scribbling down a dual-POV story that had a romance, but not a romance between the POV characters. It was an odd duck. I was writing it for fun – and for a scene that I could not get out of my head – and it didn’t fit anywhere.
I talked about it with my agent, a few editor friends, and my crit partners. All of them were absolutely baffled by my choices. Which is fair, it’s not the traditional set up readers expect to see in books of any kind. And, for a few years I let it wallow. I kicked it around, tried some other formats, and eventually just finished the silly thing to make myself happy.
Then, because my crit partner asked, I shared it with my writing friends.
Who in turn went and told my editor I’d written a new book.
Then the editor called me to ask when she was getting to see the book.
And one thing led to another until I’d written a new novella and suddenly had a release date for my fun little book about capitalism and revenge (with a dash of romance).
It’s coming out in February because it can. You can enjoy it because Valentine’s Day is coming up, or because it’s a day ending in Y. Dealer’s choice. This is a fun, shorter novella that’s not attached to any of my other in-print universes. Go enjoy a quiet reading day with your favorite drink and a story all about second chances, found family, and making a life with the people you love.
