Happy Canada Day!
Back in 2017 my family drove down the AlCan (Alaska-Canada) Highway as we moved to Seattle. We were lucky enough to be in Canada for the 150th birthday celebration and it was a blast!
Not only is Canada beautiful (and I can say all of it because I’ve seen most of southern Canada at one time or another) but the people are just as friendly and warm as all the rumors say they are. It’s true. All of it.
We started our trip by going through the border town of Tok and crossing into the Yukon. This is the first outpost of civilization after you cross the canyon between countries.
Then we headed south…
2017 was a good year for bear spotting. We hadn’t seen any wild bears in Alaska until the last week we were there, and then we saw five in a week, mostly yearling cubs.
While driving down the AlCan one day we were keeping pace with a pair of motorcyclists who said the bears would appear when they heard the motorcycles. We followed along behind them for part of the day and I got one good picture of a bear poking its nose out of the berry bushes.
If you can’t afford to visit the Yukon today you can buy a copy of THE POLAR TERROR which is set in the Yukon Territory and features locations I visited in the Yukon and British Columbia during my trip.
