If you look at a map of Alaska the Turnagain Arm is just south of Anchorage. It’s a little bend inland with a stretch of highway pinched between the inlet and the Chugach mountain range.
Because of the proximity to Anchorage and other nearby towns the Turnagain Arm Trail is a favorite hiking trail for many people. It’s an easy, well-maintained trail with gorgeous views.
Head to the trails in late spring through early fall. Watch for bears and moose (bear spray is a must-have for hiking in this area), and keep an eye on the wildfire situation. There is parking in several places as well as scenic view outlooks where you can pull off the highway safely and get pictures of the bay.
While you’re out there, stop by Beluga Point as the tide goes out for a chance to see beluga whales only a few minutes from Anchorage.
